This creed is the doctrinal foundation under everything we do at Shiloh. It is how we read the Bible, how we treat one another, how we treat our clients, and how we understand the work of technology in God's world. It is not an exhaustive summary of Christian doctrine; for that we point you to the historic confessions. It is, however, the set of beliefs to which every member of our team actively subscribes.

The Triune God

We believe in one God, eternally existent in three Persons. This is the foundation of everything else we believe.

1.1   God is one, self-existent, and sovereign over all

There is one God, self-existent and eternal, infinitely perfect, the Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of all things.

  1. Psalm 5:2
  2. Matthew 28:19
  3. John 14:26

Scripture

We believe the Bible is the written Word of God. It is truthful, authoritative, and sufficient for faith and life.

2.1   The Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God

The 66 books of the Bible are the unique, written Word of God. The Bible is divinely inspired, inerrant, infallible, supremely authoritative, and sufficient in everything it teaches. Its assertions are factually true in all the original autographs. Its authority is not limited to spiritual, religious, or redemptive themes but includes its assertions in such fields as history and science.

  1. Deuteronomy 4:2
  2. Deuteronomy 12:32
  3. 2 Timothy 3:16–17
  4. Revelation 22:18–19
2.2   Scripture interprets Scripture

The final guide to the interpretation of Scripture is Scripture itself.

2.3   Scripture is sufficient for salvation

All things necessary for our salvation are expressly and clearly taught in Scripture.

  2. Genesis 1:31
  3. Genesis 3:17–19
  4. Romans 5:12
  5. Romans 3:23
  6. 1 Corinthians 15:1–4

  9. John 3:14–18
  10. Acts 16:30–31
  11. Ephesians 2:8
  12. Romans 5:1–2
2.4   There is no "secular vs. sacred" divide

The view, commonly used to evade the implications or the authority of biblical teaching, namely that knowledge and/or truth may be divided into secular and religious, is unbiblical and therefore should be rejected.

  1. 1 Corinthians 10:31
  2. Colossians 3:17

Sin

We believe sin is real, historical, and the universal condition from which every human needs to be saved.

3.1   The fall of Adam and Eve

The special creation of Adam (the first man) and Eve (the first woman) and their subsequent fall into sin is the basis for the necessity of salvation for mankind.

  1. Genesis 2:7
  2. Genesis 2:17
  3. Genesis 2:22–23
  4. Genesis 3:6–20
  5. Romans 5:12
  6. 1 Corinthians 15:45–49
3.2   The entrance of death and suffering into the world

Human death (both physical and spiritual) as well as all animal death, disease, bloodshed, suffering, extinction, thorns and thistles, and all other natural evils (e.g., earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, etc.) entered this world subsequent to, and as a direct consequence of, man's sin.

  1. Genesis 2:16–17
  2. Genesis 3:8
  3. Genesis 3:19
  4. Genesis 4:4–8
  5. Romans 5:12
  6. Romans 8:20–22
  7. 1 Corinthians 15:21–22
3.3   Universal sin and condemnation

All mankind are sinners, inherently from Adam and individually (by choice), and are therefore subject to God's wrath and condemnation.

  1. 1 Kings 8:46
  2. Isaiah 53:6
  3. Psalm 116:11
  4. Proverbs 16:5
  5. John 3:16–18
  6. John 12:48
  7. Romans 3:23
3.4   Equal sin, equal need of grace

Since all of mankind is made in God's image and also fallen, all humans are equally sinful, equally deserving of eternal punishment, and equally able to receive salvation in Christ.

  1. Isaiah 53:6
  2. John 12:32
  3. Romans 3:23
  4. Romans 5:12
  5. 2 Peter 3:9

Man

We believe human beings are made in God's image, with equal dignity, distinct gender, and from a single human pair.

4.1   Two genders, made in God's image

Mankind, consisting of two genders (male and female), is created in the image of God. Each of these two distinct, complementary genders reflects the image of God.

  1. Genesis 1:26–27
  2. Genesis 5:2
  3. Genesis 9:6
  4. Matthew 19:4–6
  5. Mark 10:6
  6. 1 Corinthians 11:7
  7. James 3:9–10
4.2   The unique, supernatural creation of Adam and Eve

The special and unique creation of Adam from dust and Eve from Adam's rib was supernatural and immediate. Adam and Eve did not originate from any other preexisting lifeforms.

  1. Genesis 2:7
  2. Genesis 2:21–23
  3. Genesis 3:19
  4. 1 Corinthians 11:8–12
  5. 1 Corinthians 15:47–49
4.3   The sanctity of human life from conception

All human life is sacred and begins at conception (defined as the moment of fertilization). Each unborn child is a unique, living human being, created in the image of God, and must be respected and protected both before and after birth. The abortion of an unborn child or the active, intentional taking of human life through euthanasia or assisted suicide constitutes a violation of the sanctity of human life and is a crime against God and man.

  1. Genesis 9:6
  2. Exodus 20:13
  3. Deuteronomy 5:17
  4. Psalm 51:5
  5. 1 Corinthians 15:49
  6. James 2:11
4.4   One human race

There is only one race of mankind: the human race, or Adam's race. Adam and Eve were the first two humans. All people alive today are the descendants of Adam and Eve and subsequently Noah.

  1. Genesis 1:26–27
  2. Genesis 3:20
  3. Genesis 10:1
  4. Genesis 10:32
  5. 1 Corinthians 15:45–47
  6. Luke 17:27
  7. Hebrews 11:7
  8. 1 Peter 3:20
  9. 2 Peter 2:5
4.5   Equal dignity for all people

Since all humans are made in the image of God, all humans have equal dignity and value regardless of age (including the unborn), intelligence, gender, physical ability, shade of skin tone, religion, ethnicity, or any other characteristic.

  1. Genesis 1:26–27
  2. Genesis 3:20
  3. Genesis 11:9
  4. Acts 17:26–28
4.6   A biblical view of justice and identity

The concepts of "social justice," "intersectionality," and "critical race theory" as defined in modern terminology are anti-biblical and destructive to human flourishing.

  1. Ezekiel 18:1–20
  2. James 2:8–9
4.7   Parents' responsibility to raise their children in the Lord

Parents are responsible to instruct their children in Christian faith and conduct, to set before them godly and consistent examples of the same, and in every way to "bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord".

  1. Deuteronomy 6:6–9
  2. Proverbs 22:6
  3. Ephesians 6:4
4.8   Marriage and sexual ethics

The only legitimate marriage, based on the creation ordinance in Genesis 1 and 2, sanctioned by God is the joining of one naturally born man and one naturally born woman in a single, exclusive union as delineated in Scripture. God intends sexual intimacy to only occur between a man and a woman who are married to each other and has commanded that no sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman. Any form of sexual immorality, such as adultery, fornication, prostitution, homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, pornography, abuse, or any attempt to change one's gender, or disagreement with one's biological gender, is sinful and offensive to God.

  1. Genesis 1:27–28
  2. Genesis 2:24
  3. Matthew 5:27–30
  4. Matthew 19:4–5
  5. Mark 10:2–9
  6. 1 Corinthians 6:9–11
  7. 1 Thessalonians 4:3–7
  8. Hebrews 13:4
4.9   Gender, biological sex, and identity

Gender and biological sex are equivalent and cannot be separated. A person's gender is determined at conception (fertilization), coded in the DNA, and cannot be changed by drugs, hormones, or surgery. Rejection of one's biological sex (gender) or identifying oneself by the opposite sex is a sinful rejection of the way God made that person. These truths must be communicated with compassion, love, kindness, and respect, pointing everyone to the truth that God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking his mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

  1. Genesis 1:26–28
  2. Genesis 5:1–2
  3. Psalm 51:5
  4. Psalm 139:13–16
  5. Jeremiah 1:5
  6. Matthew 1:20–21
  7. Matthew 19:4–6
  8. Mark 10:6
  9. Luke 1:31
  10. Acts 3:19–21
  11. Romans 10:9–10
  12. 1 Corinthians 6:9–11
  13. Galatians 3:28

Salvation

We believe salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, the only hope for every human being.

5.1   Creation and gospel cannot be separated

The doctrines of Creator and Creation cannot ultimately be divorced from the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  1. John 1:1–3
  2. John 1:14–18
  3. Colossians 1:13–20
5.2   Freedom from sin is through Christ alone

Freedom from the penalty and power of sin is available to man only through the sacrificial death and shed blood of Jesus Christ and his complete and bodily resurrection from the dead.

  1. Luke 24:39
  2. John 8:12
  3. John 8:36
  4. John 14:6
  5. Acts 4:12
  6. 1 Timothy 2:3–6
  7. 1 Peter 1:3
5.3   Grace alone, faith alone, Christ alone

Salvation is by God's grace alone, a gift received by faith alone in Christ alone.

  1. Ephesians 2:8–9
  2. Titus 3:3–7
5.4   What it means to be born of God

The one who is born of God has repented, recognized the death of Christ as full payment for sin, received the risen Christ as Savior, Lord, and God, and sealed with the Holy Spirit for the day of redemption.

  1. John 1:12–13
  2. Acts 3:19
  3. Acts 16:31
  4. Acts 17:30–31

The Church

We believe the church is the body of Christ, gathered locally, in person, around Word and sacrament.

6.1   The church is the body of Christ

The church of Jesus Christ is composed of all who are united with him in saving faith and who are thus members of the body of which he is the head.

  2. John 3:36
  3. John 11:25
  4. Acts 16:30–31
  5. Romans 10:8–10
  6. Ephesians 5:23
  7. Colossians 1:18
6.2   Heaven, hell, and the fate of every person

Those who do not believe in Christ are subject to everlasting, conscious punishment in hell, but believers are secure to enjoy eternal life with God in heaven.

  1. Matthew 13:49–50
  2. Matthew 25:46
  3. John 3:16–18
  4. John 3:36
  5. John 5:24
  6. 1 Thessalonians 1:8–10
  7. 1 John 5:11–13
  8. Revelation 21:8
6.3   The priority of gathered, local church

All Christians are to live in fellowship in person with a local, Bible-believing church (as portrayed in the New Testament), uniting in its worship of the triune God, supporting the great commission, and loving one another with pure and sincere hearts. Online church and meetings held remotely using technology are not a substitute for this call to meet and fellowship in person locally.

  1. Acts 20:7
  2. 1 Corinthians 11:17–33
  3. 1 Corinthians 16:2
  4. Hebrews 10:23–25
  5. Hebrews 13:17

Christ's Return

We believe Jesus Christ will return in person to judge the living and the dead, and to make all things new.

7.1   The personal, bodily return of Christ

Our Lord Jesus Christ will personally and bodily return in glory as He has promised, and He will consummate His kingdom. Christ will judge the living and the dead at His return.

  1. John 6:39–40
  2. John 12:48
  3. Acts 1:9–11
  4. 1 Peter 4:5
7.2   The resurrection and final judgment

Those who have died in Christ to eternal life will be welcomed into heaven and those who have rejected him will be sent to conscious and everlasting punishment in the lake of fire (hell).

  1. Matthew 25:41
  2. Revelation 20:10

Summary

The Shiloh Creed is not a replacement for the historic Christian creeds, nor for the careful study of Scripture itself. It is a statement of what we, as a team at Shiloh, believe the Bible to teach, and what we therefore hold one another accountable to in the work we do.

If you have questions about any of these beliefs, or about how they shape the way we run our business, we welcome the conversation. Contact us, or read more about our team.

Soli Deo Gloria.
